Simpler Recycling legislation to take effect from 1 April

27, March 2025

Starting 1 April, the Government’s Simpler Recycling regulations will introduce significant changes aimed at improving waste management practices across various sectors in England, and we expect many of our members to be affected.

Uniform recycling requirements

One of the most impactful changes is the introduction of uniform recycling requirements across England. Businesses, including those in the leisure and holiday sectors, will now be required to separate dry recyclable materials such as plastic, metal, glass, paper, and card from other waste streams

This uniformity aims to eliminate confusion and ensure that recyclable materials are consistently collected and processed, regardless of location.

Mandatory food waste separation

In addition to dry recyclables, businesses will also need to separate food waste from other types of waste. This change is particularly relevant for holiday parks and caravan sites that often have dining areas and food service facilities. Properly segregating food waste will help reduce landfill usage and increase the production of renewable energy with food waste as a source.

Enhanced waste collection practices

The regulations will also enforce stricter waste collection practices. Waste collectors will be required to collect separated recyclable materials and food waste, ensuring that these materials are processed appropriately.

Businesses will need to collaborate closely with their waste collectors to comply with these new requirements and optimise their waste management systems.

Exemptions and flexibility

While the regulations are comprehensive, there are exemptions for micro-firms (those with less than ten full-time employees), which will have until March 31, 2027, to comply.

This flexibility is designed to support smaller businesses in transitioning to the new system without undue burden. Additionally, businesses can decide on the size of containers and frequency of collections based on the volume of waste they produce.

Impact on trade sectors

For many of our members, these changes may mean designing products with recycling in mind, ensuring that materials used can be easily separated and recycled. Members, whether they be holiday parks, suppliers, manufacturers or vehicle dealerships, will need to implement new waste management protocols to comply with the regulations, potentially requiring investment in new bins and training for staff.
