Her Majesty The Queen and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh celebrate UK caravan manufacturing with visit to Bailey of Bristol.

It was a proud moment for the caravanning industry yesterday, Thursday 22nd November 2012, when one if its longest established manufacturers received a Royal visit from Her Majesty The Queen, accompanied by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh.

The Royal Couple visited manufacturer Bailey of Bristol, coinciding with the company’s 65th Anniversary. They received a guided tour of its South Liberty Lane production plant in Bristol from owners, the Howard family.

To the delight of guests and media, The Royal Couple took a short trip in a Bailey motorhome, the Approach SE 760, and inspected a Unicorn Cadiz caravan and the Bailey production line before being invited by MD, Nick Howard, to unveil a plaque commemorating the historic visit.

In addition to meeting members of the Howard family, management and production team, The Royal Couple were introduced to Grenville Chamberlain, Chairman of consumer membership organisation The Caravan Club, and the NCC’s Director General, John Lally, who attended the event to represent the interests of the industry as a whole.

Before their departure, Nick Howard’s daughter, Tamsin (age seven) presented Her Majesty with a beautiful posy of flowers.

Her Majesty The Queen and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh had expressed an interest in visiting British manufacturing companies as part of their Diamond Jubilee Tour.

The caravan and motorhome industry remains one of the country’s great manufacturing success stories and is estimated to have a value of in excess of £609 million.

UK manufacturers account for the production of 96% of touring caravans and 70% of motorhomes currently sold in the UK, with approximately 663,000 caravan and motorhomes estimated to be in regular use.

The UK touring caravan, motorhome, caravan holiday home and park home industries provide employment for in excess of 120,000 workers and the industry as a whole is estimated to contribute in excess of £6 billion to the UK economy via retail sales and tourism.

Says John Lally; “Congratulations to Bailey on the excellent organisation of yesterday’s Royal Visit; the team at Bailey did our industry proud and saw it catapulted into the media spotlight for all the right reasons. The UK caravan industry is a true British success story and this visit gives us a platform on which to promote this.”

“Our compliments also go to Bailey on the sixty-fifth anniversary of the production of their very first caravan. It is no mean feat for a manufacturer to thrive over so many decades and Bailey demonstrates how a continued commitment to innovation and investment allows our industry to persevere in a challenging economic climate.”
